The guitar is brand new and actually has not 'opened up' yet. The sound is a little muddy, and very much dependent on air humidity. On drier days it sounds considerably better. But that will change in a year or so...! In the meantime it's a marvel to look at!
Bummer about your original CL, but that is one stunner you have there. How does the Washburn sound? It looks great for it's age.
And though I don't succumb to envy, I now feel the GAS pressure rising again...thanks. :D |

The Washburn sounds, well, "interesting". I will not say "good", because in those days they just didn't know how to make a good sounding guitar (e.g., it has no sound bracing: just one cross brace running parallel to the bridge.)
The Washburn sounds pretty much like a classical guitar strung with steel strings: loud and hollow. Also: very dry, crisp and mature, and incredibly L O U D. Light at the bass end (for obvious reasons), strong in the mid range and very bright with a long, long sustain at the high end.
I guess if you would replace the original 'bracing' by a modern, Martin-like X-bracing, you could dramatically improve the sound of the guitar. The back would come off fairly easily (it has no edge binding), so it would not be a very tough job.
But then again, I could also just play a new, good guitar and leave this old beauty in its original state... I guess I go for this option!
By the way, I strung the Wasburn with nylon strings and that also gives a very nice, old, smooth sound. And as I don't have a classical guitar, it seems another nice alternative...
