Location: Monroe, Ohio (Cincinnati) | Hi all,
As I shop and play Ovation guitars in the stores, I am running into OP 24 and OP 30 Preamps.
I have discovered the obvious differences such as the modular design and tuner in the OP30.
What about sound?
Are there other differences that I should know about?
From viewing the Ovation Website I am surmising that the OP24 is no longer in production, is this correct?
Then there is the OP24+
Since I am looking for a guitar to play almost exclusively plugged in, the electronics are very important for me.
Any help or opinions would be appreciated.

1. I don't like the new modular pre-amps. They look too space-age and consume too much internal volume.
2. I like the OP24 better than the 24+ or 24+C. The volume pot seems to be quieter over its lifetime than sliders. Just make sure you have an external battery access.
3. Optima is by far my favorite. It's quiet, flexible, the tuner is quite good, and the XLR output in nice to have for recording work. |

Location: Scotland | Set flat they all sound pretty similar, any differences could be attributed to any number of other factors. The old 3 band Op24 is a great sounding preamp, much better than the 24+. The Notch filter & tuner are difficult to live without, but I think it's too easy to achieve piss-poor tones with the fancier preamps. For example, combine the pre-shape function with a steep mid-cut and you have a guitar sound with no balls. Simplicity is the key, the fancy stuff can be done better with outboard gear if you need it. |
