I have a 1517 Ultra circa '85.
Brown bowl, deep, natural, nickel pegs and with a 32xxxxx serial #. The blue oval Ultra label says built in USA. I assume this is CT.
Bought it used over ten years ago. Sweet, extra fine, near mint. Plays great, seems to really stay around tune for long periods.
Guess it's dumb to say, that it feels better and sounds better that most I pick up off the shelf today. Do any agree? One thing I seem to miss is the polished neck and head. Just makes it feel finished.
Question is, when did O start manufacturing in Korea?

The first factory seeking trip to Ko-Reeha was in early 1982 with production the following year.

'nother question. Are Ultra's pretty much entry level models?

They would have a peel-off label on the back of the headstock which says:Made in Korea. Most people peel them off. Also, look at the label inside of the guitar. Most people leave those.

The product label inside the soundhole will identify the origin as Korea.

thanks guys, I assumed it to be American made, with all due respect to Korea. Does anyone else honestly think overall quality has dimished over the years due to cost cutting? So is the Ultra a early base model? I bought it used, rather filthy, diamond in the rough, guess before the store clean it and found it's real condition. $185.

Not bad guitars for the money.
The one pictured here (from 4th of July) is a 1515D . . . I paid $200 used from a music store.
The electronics are dodgy, it's nowhere NEAR as playable as my Legend-12, but it's got a nice, deep-bowl acoustic sound and I don't have to worry about where I take it . . . .

Cliff. Nice looking guitar, especially for the money. Also a pretty nice boat. Must have been a great day on the water. Hey, just wondering, does the lyrachord bowl give you nipple burn? No seriously, I always found that the shiny bowl guitars were much more gentle on my nipples when playing shirtless. The only drawback of course is that when you look down at the shiny bowl, you see the reflection of your hairy armpit. Not a pretty sight.

Dave, the pic was taken in your old backyard!
That's Tice's Shoals and my headstock is pointing directly at the "backside" of Island Beach State Park.

Funny that you mention that, because that particular guitar has absolutely the MOST texture that I've EVER seen on an O bowl, and CAN be somewhat painful after a while. Luckily, Master Templeman sent me a bunch of "pasties" leftover from the days when he used to dance in the Soho bath houses . . . . .

Looking at the picture, I now realize why the back of my neck is killing me! . . . luckily, I was able to get out of wearing a tie today.

I don't think so. There are people on this board who have always been into nipple awareness.

Do you think that nipple rings can scratch the finish on a shiny bowl? Cliff, could you do this experiment for us? And take photos? Of the guitar?

You know, you could just epoxy on a hook to the back and it would slide right into the nipple ring and then you wouldn't have to worry about that strap making your shoulder sore and a bit raw when you play without a shirt. How's that sound?

Excuse me, but I gotta puke. That feeling started with the pic of Clifford and then got worse. Witko and SeeDoubleYewKayToo just made it worse.

But Cliff, for scientific reasons, you need to do the research.

EDIT EDIT EDIT

// Potentially offending post removed by author with sincere apologies to anyone who saw it and may have been offended //

As my attempt at redemption, I'll post this:

Not a toy!

Notice it says, 'This is not a toy!' yet the name on the headstock is the same company that makes those cheap R/C cars at Toys R Us. :)

Applesauce? I thought it was about luan bi-folds or something. If it was applesauce, well, everyone knows chunky beats that pureed stuff any day!

;)

And speaking of Korean models...

Funky, but I'm intrigued by the sound holes

thanks guys for all you useful input on the original topic. Is this board actually worth posting legitimate questions to be answered?

You know, I just re-read this entire thread and yes the original question was in fact answered very nicely by several members. So I can only conclude that YES this is a forum to post legitimate questions and get honest answers. Does anyone have a problem with that?

The other part of the question was where the ultra fit in and that was right between the Ko-Reehans and the USA Balladeers. The imports were entry, this was 2 and the US took off from there. Then Marketing got involved and there was mass prolifferation of Imports through out all the price ranges and the Ultra went away.

I got mine from Paul Templeman, but he's on "Tour" right now in Amsterdam having fat German businessmen stuff Euros into his G-string . . . . I'm relatively sure that I'll be "hearing" from him upon his return . . ;)

In honesty Sam, he's probably in Scotland . .
I believe he plays the SummerTours of his Nashville buddy Bob Cheevers.

Not positive (never heard it), but knowing Temp, it's probably Naishville Country-ish Singer/Songwriter type stuff.

Try a Google on Bob Cheevers? . . .

Actually I came home yesterday to get the loose change out of my underwear and go see Bonnie Raitt in concert. We had front row seats, good job she was wearing trousers. She must be in her mid-50's, but she looks great & has the ass of a 20-year old. And she's a killer slide player (for a girl) I'm rejoining Bob at the weekend for the last leg of the Scottish highlands & islands then we're into the North East of England for a while.
