Location: Charlotte NC | Probably few if any of them would be considered top 5 bassists from a skill perspective, but over on TalkBass we have a thread going on who are the most gorgeous bass players HERE The thread has been kept alive so long that some of the early pictures are now gone so it's best to go to the end and work backwards. I got permission from the wife to view it from time to time without guilt! LOL |

A few years back, when I mentioned to my sister (a classical concert pianist, with masters in music) that I was interested in doing some some in depth study of theory and analyzing song structure, she asked her own teacher for suggestions to guide me. Interestingly, the teacher's reply was to study the bass lines of Beatles songs for a good understanding of rhythm and harmony theory.
A great suggestion, but one I did not expect from someone in that genre of music.

After 30 years of being able to sing and play guitar at the same time, singing while playing any kind bass line beyond the chord root is still a major struggle for me. I admire folks like McCartney, Sting, and Cheryl Crowe who make it look so easy. |

| After working for a while now on some music sets I would like to add Chris Squire is in a league of his own. If you look at the body of work and the vocal abilities and his solo work you just gotta be impressed, then when you try and play his Bass lines and wipe the sweat off after each song, Hey he is The Man on a bass for me. After that I guess
Geedy Lee
John Entwhistle ( Can't ever spell his name right?)
Sting
and the list goes on and on....
Like to add; John had the nicest Ovation Acoustic bass I have ever seen! and the Bassist for Jon Luc Ponty is impressive and has never made any list I know of?
I have to admit I have not been listening to much music from anyone else for a little while now I have learn by ear I can't read that chicken scratch? so I have these guy's on the brain now? Randy |

Most of the really good ones have been mentioned already. Except:
Geezer Butler (Sabbath)
Les Claypool (duh)
Scott Reeder (Kyuss, Unida)
Scott is so good that when I played some Kyuss live material for my girlfriend she said, "These guys are great... who's their rhythm guitar player?"
They don't have one. |
