I just joined the fan club, hopefully to get info
on my guitar. The model number is 1122-4. I have
some info from ovationguitars.com's, "Cracking the
Code". Acoustic roundback, artist bowl 5 1/2" deep, Deluxe Baladeer, natural colour. Perhaps made in 1967 (Nov.) to 1968 (July). I would appreciate any feedback about this model; info, value, history, appeal. Thank you.

Ocean, sounds like a nice piece. I'm far from the expert on Os this old, but it sounds like it would be reasonably desirable if in good shape. There are some people here who really like the artist bowl guitars, some don't.

The shallowness of the bowl compared to the "normal" deep bowl is supposed to compromise the depth of the sound, which some don't care for. The artist bowl instruments are supposed to be more of a lead guitar than rhythm, from what I have gleaned here. I believe the artist bowl depth came from a request by Glen Campbell, although yours is not a GC signature model(that is the 1127).

This is the poorer sister to the 1123, both had spruce tops and mid bowls. If it was a deep bowl it would have cedar and be a 1113.

Before Cliff comes back with an offer of $250, I'll add that the shallow artist bowl is supposed to give a "brighter" sound, that is why it is supposed to be a lead guitar.

Reminds me of my grandfather. Once, I made the mistake of telling him I *wanted* something or other. He held out both hands, palms up and laughed. I asked him, in my naivete, what was so funny. He said, holding up his right hand, 'Crap in this hand,' then, holding up his left hand, 'want in this hand. Which one are you going to fill up first?' I didn't get it for a couple of years.

I miss him.

Yeah, but everybody knows that O's were built for rhythm. Nobody plays an O as lead...therefore, it's undesireable crap that not even Cliff would want. Just to be cordial, I'll offer $125, but the OP will have to pay shipping. Oh, and it should have the OHSC for that kind of dough!

:D

Just kidding, Ocean. Welcome abored! No, wait, aboard!

Hi Ocean, welcome!

I think your guitar is a little newer than '67 if it has the artisi bowl as they didn't show up until about 1970. What is the serial #?

Welcome Ocean,

The 1122-4 is a.k.a. the "Classic Balladeer"; and was a realatively short lived model in the Ovation line. It was only made for about three or four years, from approx. 1972-75 (maybe 76). I owned one for a couple of years. All of this is from memory, but I believe it was available as an acoustic only. At any rate, it's a nice guitar... Enjoy!

The 1122 had a plain white rosette under the black leaf pattern, not the pearloid and had cheaper keys than the big sister 1123. I believe that they had the same brace pattern.

You'll like it here Ocean, why don't you go back to the sign in sheet and put where you're from? (Or would like to be from) Thanks.

Hello cwk2 (w-2),
Yes, I do like it here, thanks. I'm from Canada. Actually I'm still in Canada. ;-)

Hi Jeff,
You're not the only one to think my guitar may be from 1972-1976. I thought it was 1967-1968 based on what I read on ovationguitars.com.

Hey Bluebird/Wayne,
Thanks for the info. The serial number is 080385. Mean anything? The model number is part of an attractive, oval, pewter coloured metal plaque.

I think the 70's too, it wouldn't be the 60's. The line up hadn't gotten big enough for it by then.

Hi Moody p.i./Paul,
Thanks. So 1976 and 1977 for age. That confirms what others on site thought too. Do you know what it might be worth? It's in mint condition.

Hi cwk2(w-2),
See above. haha. Also thanks.

Hello again Bluebird/Wayne,
I'm not near any oceans. I'm in Ontario so I have a long way to travel to get to any oceans but it's worth it. I haven't been to eastern Canada for a long time but it's on my list. I was in Massachusetts last October. Saw the ocean there and had an interesting time in Salem for Halloween. It's like Mardi gras with a Halloween theme. About 30,000 people, maybe half in costumes and 6 public portable toilets.

"About 30,000 people, maybe half in costumes and 6 public portable toilets."

Sounds like you know about as much about crap as most of us do.

"What's it worth?" I think Miles ought to charge a dollar ($1.47 Canadian) every time that question is asked. The more popular dollar value is usually compared to what that model has fetched on Ebay, which is comparable to a Flea Market sale.

Hopfully you consider it more valuable that the "market". The thing to ask is is how desirable is the market for your model today. That, would be an interesting one to hear.

You have a good point, Mike, one that I have pondered. I wonder how many of the 2600-odd membership are people who joined to ask "how much is my guitar worth?" and then disappeared.

They often don't get much response and then probably think we're unfriendly. But it does get a little old. It just proves few people read the FAQs, unfortunately, because the answer is there.

Actually, the answer is "whatever someone will pay you for it", as it is for about anything. :)

Roger:

I've got a member number of 77. I used to answer these questions, then realized that there is no good answer and backed off. The last time I answered one, I got (tongue in cheek) reamed by another board member (and a good pal) and I'm just not going to answer these questions any more.

The only good answer to to refer the person to ebay. A guitar is worth whatever somebody will pay for it. Having just seen a Breadwinner Ltd go for over $1900, I realize it's an interesting market.

What I have seen and felt (now that I've been on the board a whoppin 7 months) is the elation and depression when one of your favorite O's hits a great price and respectability. It's a high cause you have one and a low because you want one and the price just went up!

Such is life.

Hello MWoody,
Good one. ;-) Crap can be funny. There was/is a website called doodie.com devoted to jokes on only that subject. Why do I know that?!?
I'd pay $1US (=$200Can. haha) for answers to any or all of my questions.

Hello again Roger,
I joined just to find info and get feedback on the history, age, value, appeal and I'm delighted with the responses. They have been informative and friendly.

Hi moody,p.i./Paul,
Your pal doesn't read everything here does he? ;-) Maybe I should sell it to Cliff for $100Can. but that might depress MWoody, and, affect the value of every Ovation everywhere. haha.

Thanks again to every respondant for all your help (and laughs) so far.

Ah, . . so now it turns out that it's NOT a '67 DB . . . . $75!!! :D

Welcome, "Ocean" and it was probably me that was giving Moody shit (I usally DO).

Did the Salem/Halloween thing a few years ago as well. Stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel on the "Common". Had a GREAT time!! Highly recommend it to anyone.

If the guitar has even a modicum of "sentimental value" to you, . . . . keep it.

Hi Cliff,
Finally, a decent welcome from you. Well, if you ignore the $75 offer.
The Hawthorne is definately the place to stay amid all the action. So very convenient also. Did you go to their Halloween Ball? Are you in any of their Halloween photos on their website? I think they keep them posted for four years. We stayed in Wakefield about 12 miles from Salem. The traffic on Halloween was crazy. It took us 1 1/2 hours to drive 12 miles. Worth it though. Next time I will stay in Salem for sure. The costumes were wonderful. So creative, funny, original, etc. I design and make costumes part-time. I went as a witch because it was a good costume that travelled well. My favourite costume, that is exceptional (in my own mind), is a unique bumble bee. The adorable feet are too large when you must share a car trunk with two other people who insisted on each bringing their own coolerS (in addition to their luggage) just for their own lunches on the drive down. I deserve a medal for travelling with two people who are on the extreme opposite diets and can debate about it for hours on end. I brought music but not the headphones. :-/ lalalalala.
About my guitar. Will my membership be revoked if I confess that I do not even play a guitar? I love music. I love shows. I love musicals. The only sentimental value is when I hear others play it and the memories of dusting it off from time to time.
By the way. I left a little note for you on the weekend on one of your postings. ;-)

Hi Slap,
Yes, Canadians may travel anywhere. Even to Cuba. haha.
What year were you in Salem for Halloween. How old were your kids when they went and what did they think of it?

Hi Ocean, welcome aboard.
Personalyy I think you only have to be an Ovation fan, I don't think you have to be able to play one. Hell I'm a F4U Corsair fan but I couldn't fly one. (Although I have an RC model of one I can fly!)
Having said that, you should think about thae fact that you won't start learning any younger & this is the place to ask questions about learning. There are some truely outstanding guitar players that post on this board, (unfortunately I'm not one of them) :)

Question:

". . I was in Massachusetts last October. Saw the ocean there and had an interesting time in Salem for Halloween. It's like Mardi gras with a Halloween theme. About 30,000 people, maybe half in costumes and 6 public portable toilets. . ."

Duzzat mean the other half was nekked??

Returning to the topic of the 1122-4, these are fine guitars, as I presently own one and it is one of my favorite artist bowl acoustic nylon-string Ovations. The 1122's and 1123's have a voice not common to other Ovations, and therefore it is a desirable model. However, due to the twelve fret neck and lack of electronics, they have a very limited appeal to buyers.

Regarding value, in recent months several of these have been sold on eBay, and in pristine condition they have gone for $300 - $450. In the past two weeks, an 1122-4 went for $305, and an 1123-4 with a more recent decal (possible refin) went for $430.

Hi bobfrith,
Thank you for the info. I'm grateful.
Do you think this model would be hard for a woman to learn to play, who's never played any guitar before?

Hi Nils,
Thanks for the welcome. I enjoy listening to guitars. So far I have not had a desire to learn to play but you're right about this being the place to ask for advice.
Did you build your RC model? I recently met a fellow who builds large model planes that he flies remotely. His latest has quite a wide span and I've been invited to the launch. Should be interesting. Another friend launches rockets that are about up to three feet high in size. That's fun too.
Your "other half" comment keeps making me laugh.

I have somewhere between 18 & 22 model airplanes. I'm not sure right now. I know one is 'out of order' at the moment. 5 or 6 are R/C planes & the rest are control line, mostly competition stunters. I built all but three of them. The largest one has about a 7 foot wingspan.
