Location: Columbia, MD | Proud owner of a new (to me) Celebrity nylon sting (with new tuners and rosette). Having a great time with it. Spent most of my last guitar lesson talking about Ovation history and design with my teacher. One question that came up the neither he nor I could answer, "Why is the sound hole so big?" Its about an inch larger than a regular classical guitar.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Joe |

"Why is the sound hole so big?"
I think Ovation modeled it after some of the original members here on the OFC...
as a tribute, of course! :D
Actually, I don't have a clue but, Welcome anyway! |

| Welcome to the madhouse. Somebody knowledgeable will come along soon enough. And if not someone will BS his or her way through an answer. |

Welcome.
Two answers come to mind:
1. Sound projection
2. Access to the interior (if it has electronics and not rear hatch) |

Location: Boise, Idaho | Some of the early Balladeers had smaller sound holes, but they went to what now seems to be the traditional size. I suspect that they didn't really model the classical Ovations after classical guitars, so they didn't go with the small soundhole. I have played a few really expensive classical guitars, though, and don't remember the soundholes being smaller. Don't know if there is a "standard".
If you look at my picture on the Social Network site (I'd do a link, but it takes me too long) it shows me tuning a $15,000 classical guitar in Barcelona. The soundhole looks like the same size as the Ovations. |

Professor Templeman please take over... Correct. Ovation, and most larger steel-string guitars have a soundhole diameter of 4inches. Classical guitars have comparably smaller bodies, so their soundholes are usually a little smaller, around 3.5 to 3.75inches in diameter. Hardly a huge difference.
As the Celeb classic is based on an Ovation steelstring body-size a standard 4inch soundhole would be expected. |

Go back to the Martin forum (or better still, the Acoustic Guitar Forum) and tell em you love Ovation guitars.
Then sit back and watch the poison spread. Don't bite back and fan the flames, just watch. |
