Location: Lafayette, Louisiana | Being born and raised in south Louisiana, you get more that enough of "cajun music". Now I am no fan of cajun music, and I try to avoid it at all costs. Well today I was at the local music store getting some strings and playing a few guitars. Well there were a couple of guys there just beating the hell out of a couple of Martins. They were singing some french songs and while they were not singing, they were talking very loud. I took down a guitar and started playing some stuff when one of the guys asked if I liked Martin guitars. I told him they are nice, but they are just not for me. You should have seen that guys face. You could have sworn I just cut down his wife or something. This guy was a cajun and didn't speak the best english. His words of wisdom to me were, "Ma dem Martins are the best". I tried to tell him yes they are the best for him, but not for me. This seem to just get him more upset, so I just put the guitar back and left. It is a funny thing down here. These "cajun" musicians all love to tell you how they have the best. I try to avoid these people at all costs! |

I am amazed that any of those cajuns are still around. I remember one in the Army in the early 50's who spoke english but of a type that almost required an interpreter, not a French one but a cajun one. I personally love cajun music but have seldom heard it played on Martins, Ovations would be better for cruisin' the bayous between songs, that monster Ovation that we saw disguised as a reception desk would outfloat any pirogue I've ever seen.

Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma | Loving Lousiana as I do, I've been around alot of cajuns and have always enjoyed the dialect... I love the odd romance of the way it rolls along... Although they love Martins they also love the washboard, washtub base and accordians...Go figure that's quite a "mess" of instruments...

So, does that make me a Canajun? |

Acadia is now Nova Scotia; many of the Acadians (French) came to the Louisiana area during the Grand Derangement (exile) by the British...at least those that didn't die at sea in British prison ships or in Liverpool prisons. |
