At first glance, Kaki King doesn't cut a fearsome
figure.

Standing just 5 feet tall, the outrageously talented finger-style guitarist could easily pass for Natalie Portman's street-wise older sister. But when she launches into one of her original pieces, grown men start to shiver.

"The first time I saw her play she scared the audience to death," says multi-instrumentalist David Lindley, with whom King has toured as an opening act. "Jaws dropped. She's a really fearless player."

Lindley is just one of the legions of fans that King, 25, has won since the release last year of her self-produced album, "Everybody Loves You" (Velour). Through incessant touring, both as a solo act and an opener for performers such as David Byrne, Robert Randolph, Keb' Mo', Marianne Faithful, Soulive and Charlie Hunter, King has emerged as the first finger-style guitar star in at least a generation, even appearing on "Late Night" with Conan O'Brien.

Her debut recording attracted so much attention that she was signed by Epic, which released her sophomore album, "Legs to Make Us Longer," on Tuesday. She celebrates the CD's arrival with solo performances Wednesday at Berkeley's Freight & Salvage and Thursday
at the Independent.

Favoring low tunings that accentuate her Ovation's
luscious, resonant bass tones, King has developed a hybrid style that involves two-handed tapping,
plucking, string rubbing and slapping her guitar's
rounded back for percussive effect.
