On my tape deck - hold on to your hats - Sufi devotional music by singer Nusrat Fatah Ali Khan (alright, alright - so I have eclectic tastes; so sue me).
Country Artist - do you know if McLaughlin's Music Spoken Here is available on CD? It's fairly old; I have the album (remember those big plastic discs you got sound out of by dragging some needle-like thingy across them?), but would like to get it on CD. |

Back then, the fact that the drummer (Wyatt was his name?) played shirtless created quite a stir. My group (I was a drummer then) incorporated some of the Machine's songs into our sets (I liked "I Did It Again", which we played).
Oh yeah, that Hendrix guy was pretty good, too. |

Nothing wrong with eclectic. If this was asked two days ago, I'd have had to list:
Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangashkar and Muhammad Rafi! (I was in one of *those* moods). If anyone is looking for a good Bollywood-type movie, I recommend 'The Pushpak' (I think that's it, the name of the big hotel, spelling might be off). My H1B buddies all think I'm weird...I knew about this stuff before I met them. :) |

these guys are a must hear. tighter than--well we don't say stuff like that anymore here.
a very good friend of mine helps produce and promote them. he always has string cheese paraphenelia and recordings for me every time i am back in new mexico.
i saw string cheese and david byrne at paolo soleri in santa fe on the same ticket once. byrne was playing with a dozen brazilians. the entire crowd went aerobic for close to 5 hours, and the security was joining in on more than just the jumping. reminded me of the 60's. it was like a micro woodstock with no garbage left behind. |

Saw Bueno Vista Social Club on your list
I have hours of tape of those Cuban suvivors and great musicians.
For any of you who think communism is the future of the world, you might like to see the videos that RY Cooder made of the Buena Vista Social Club, great musicians living in abject poverty because they couldn't contribute to the modern day messiah, Fidel Castro, who lives in luxury while great musicians suffer in abject poverty, the revolutionaries only want power and luxury, the musicians were cursed as not willing to break their back chopping cane for the sublime leaders wealth for music in Cuba is a anti social abberation that should have been beheaded along with all the other liberals who were herded into the stadiums and shot in a modern day version of the Christians and the Lions.
Every liberal ass who loved Castro was lined up and shot after his success, and every nazi supporter was promoted to a position of power to keep the liberal shits down. They took them all to a stadium and shot them so there would not be a resistance that could spell or play.
If you love communism, raise your hand, your communist friends will dispose of you quite efficiently, they love shitheads with no values other than power. |

I'm not overly familiar with either (other than both are MAJOR sponsors of the NY AutoShow . . ).
A co-worker's wife used to work for Sirius. He told me (at the time, - a couple years ago) that if I was considering sat/rad, to go w/XM, as he didn't think Sirius would be around for long. Evidently, they'd spent a boatload o' money on marketing and didn't have the revenue to "back up" what they were offering. . . . As I said that was a couple years ago, and they seem to being doing well now. Picking up Howard Stern for next year (and having their stock go up 33% overnight) doesn't hurt.
When I bought the Cruiser, it came with "satellite-ready" radio (I assume it probably needs some chips installed to activate). I'd been pondering it, but really haven't had any first (or second)-hand experience with either service.
Being a graphic designer, a dog-lover, and a star-gazer, I've found Sirius' logo to be very imaginative (for those that may not know, Sirius is the "Dog Star"). Maybe not the most "comprehensive" way of selecting a service, but I often find myself selecting wines by the impressions I get from their label design - with a relatively (and surprisingly) high rate of success . . . ;-)
Bill, I'd like to hear your opinions of it after you'd had it for a while . . . |

Location: Houston, Texas | I will never forget going to a Genesis concert back in probably 1971 at the old Music Hall in Houston. About 10 minutes before the show began, an elderly couple walked in, dressed in full tuxedo and evening gown. They looked around at the mostly high school crowd, already passing joints around, and undeterred, proceeded to take their seats. I think they must have thought they were going to some religious production or play. The amazing thing is that the entire crowd were very polite to them. I don't think anyone offered them a joint, but to the old couples credit they waited patiently for the show began and sat through two songs before quietly exiting.
I probably still have a copy of "Foxtrot" on LP somewhere around here. |

This is back when she performed exclusively solo and even before she married Eric Taylor who is also a singer/songwriter. Her guitar playing ability really shined back then and her voice and songs could bring a tear to your eye. Longneck bottles and Nanci Griffith were a big reason my college scores weren't higher. When she finally started recording and became "successful", it just wasn't the same anymore. She definitely shined brightest in her solo performances. |

I've always liked Ry's album "Bop Till You Drop". If I remember correctly, it was the first album recorded and mastered 100% digital. Another one I always liked was "Jamming with Edward", which was Ry Cooder with Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Nicky Hopkins. |

If you like Cab's, you should find yourself a bottle of Smoking Loon (1999). The label is funny, the wine is incredible. And it's only ~$9/bottle. The 2000 Smoking Loon is just as good, but they changed the label. I have also had their Syrah, but didn't think it was as good.
For the record, we have a running contest with some close friends to see who can find the best bottle of wine for the least cost (it all started wtih an argument about quality vs. cost). So far, everyone agrees the Loon is winning. Unfortunately, it wasn't my find. =( |

I saw John Fogerty on Austin City Limits last week and I still can’t stop tapping my foot. Say what you want about this guy's beady little eyes and dye job, but you got to love his music. If these songs were released as new today they would be hits.
I especially have a great deal of respect for a musician that writes most of his own material, plays his own lead guitar solos (even in his old age), and still sings and performs with the enthusiasm of a 16 year old. I hope to be doing as well at his age. |

Location: NJ | Lately, Jeanette and I have been partial to Yellow Tail (Aussie) as our "house table wine", though I absolutely LOVE Yangarra Park Shiraz (tho it doesn't sell well, and I have to order it by the case). For some reason, I seemed to have developed a penchant for Australian wines . . .
". . A glass of Shiraz on a Friday evening,
Looking out from the observatory,
The Sun is melting in a wine-dark ocean,
It brings out the "Australian" in me, oh yeah,
It brings out the Australian in me . . ."
(from "Shiraz Shuffle" by Al Stewart from his absolutely BRILLIANT album "From The Cellars" which is an album of songs TOTALLY dedicated to all things "of the grape" and contains some astounding guitar-work by Laurence Juber (and others). It's a UK import, and hard to come by, but if you're into wine & music, it's a "must have" and well worth the expense of ordering).
Recently, I just started listening to OUR OWN (CountryArtist) Sergio Lara's "Con La Lluvia" . .
GOOD STUFF!! I just used it in the car this morning as "digital blood-pressure medication" to get me through ". . counting the cars on the NewJerseyTurnpike . . ." in the HOUR AND A HALF dive (which normally takes 20 mins.) . . to get me to work this morning (yes, it's Saturday) . . .

Location: Midland, MI | Cliff's comment about 'the grape' for some reason sparked a neuron:
Grapes have a very high content of rhodium and iridium. A typical 4oz glass of COncord grape juice made from frozen concentrate contains ~127mg of rhodium and ~48mg of iridium (they're of the light platinum family, if I recall my periodic table correctly), which is significantly more than any other food product (in similar quantity). The interesting thing is that the human brain contains approximately 5%, by dry weight, rhodium and iridium. The last paper I read on it proposed that the two metals, being found in high concentration in dendrites and neurons, are fundamental to proper brain functioning.
A complete and total digression/stream of consciousness post, but hey, it makes for a good excuse when I go for that third glass of cab. Oh, fermentation doesn't reduce the levels of the two metals, only concentrates them. :) |

Location: Las Cruces, NM | I compare today's box wines to the country wines of France Hemingway praised so much in "A Moveable Feast". You can drink above average varietals and burgundies for around $2.00 a liter, and if you want to emulate the Hemingway Spanish adventures, pull out the bag and pretend it's a goatskin. Starving artists don't have to drink Gallo and puke all night, the box wines are very quality controlled and you don't get an undrinkable schlock one time and a barely drinkable wine another. Some vintners are now thinking of putting some top drawer in boxes, as it is a way to serve wine where it doesn't oxidize after opening.
One of my favorite musicians died in the last few years, Mickey Newberry, his "Frisco Mabel Joy" album and CD is one I play frequently when I am sampling my country wine. He wrote "She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye" that Jerry Lee Lewis did okay with.

OK, next...on topic about the current artist selection. (Side note, Russ - did you just know from memry what was in your jukebox or were you TQ'd up enough to go on a mission and catalog the whole damn thing?!) My list certainly demonstrates my musical schizophrenia, I think, but I could be wrong if purple equals dawn eggs.

Jayhawks - Smile (Trouble - great song)
Thin Lizzy
Steely Dan - Aja
Dio
Maiden
Kelly Joe Phelps
Stephen Stills - Stills Alone

Dead - I'm no deadhead, but I inadvertantly groove on Box of Rain, Sugar Magnolia, Attics, et al...
Steve Morse - underrated and unknown except by players

I'm sure it probably is, although I'm unaware of him ever joining up with Lyle Lovett. Actually his marriage to Nanci Griffith only lasted about a year or so. He's pretty talented in his own right. Lyle Lovett used to play there all the time and that was back before he was nationally known as well.
As a side note, I have a copy of an LP by Steve Morse titled "Stand Up" from 1985 with guest musicians Peter Frampton, Eric Johnson, Albert Lee, Alex Ligertwood (was with Carlos Santana for a while), among others. Ovation is mentioned in the credits, so I assume he plays them at least occasionally. Hmm, I'll have to dust off the turntable and give this a listen today.

All eight discs of 'Miles Davis - The Complete Prestige Recordings' and 'Miles Davis and Gil Evans - The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings - Disc 1 (Miles Ahead)'.
W00T! Man, he was smokin'. The first introduction I had to Davis was 'Bitches Brew,' but I have to say that I prefer the more straight ahead stuff. |
