I don't know what kind of weather you guy's get way down south and all? You make it sound cold. It's a sultry "43" this morning, and wet here, in the real cold country! Leaves are falling like rain when the wind picks up a little.

Yep Warm as a frog! I guess I'll have to sit in front of the fireplace and play some music.

After I get that pile of wood stacked up.

OK he's gone let's all get Nak^%^%d!!!!

Ahhh second thought lets not?

Very wise of you to time your migration to coincide with the cooling up north and the end of sunami season down south.

I know a somewhat crazy but grounded ex-trucker in NC with a great accent and damn fine sense of humor if you need a ride.

Haven't talked to him in a while - have you?

Scott, not talked to him in a coonsage. Got to fix that this year. Tell them all Hey for us.

Now the real question, What is it with these $$##$#@$ people who hog the left lane and go 5 over the limit and never move over? Why do they always have the chains around their liscense plates?(you know the ones) Or they are a 20 year old female? I need to get a 6x6x5foot chunck of mahogony on the front of the rover and move these people out of the hammer lane! ^%^%$#$#@$#%^&*&^%$@@$#%$##!!!!!!!

OK, I'm better now but it sure does piss me off. Still not a bad run, 17 hours drive time(over two days) and an average of 68.6 mph

Were they all driving Saturns? In 2.5 years of my 127.7 mile (one way) commute, I found that most of the fsckchops (sorry, Unix thing) in the left hand lane were women driving Saturns. I grew to dread the sight of one on the road. =(

Bill,

Very heartless of you to bring up the left lane controversy.

!@#$$%%^^&&&*

((*&&^%%$

And more...

Hey, you gotta understand that I love my wife, have for 14 years, and will continue till I assume room temp...

but goddammit after all these years she still drives in the FFFFFF left lane as though it were the appropriate lane. The whole idea when she takes the wheel is to let me chill out for awhile and talk about existensial subject matter like the nature of farts and our warped reactions to such a natural event (by the way - I'm not the best farter, she is). It allows me time to try to make a musical connection between John Denver and Ronnie James Dio - and I am convinced that if she would just get our f%%%^^^ van over into the F%%%^^^ right lane, then I would be able to focus on the kind of intellectual epiphonies that Bailey gets to breathe in every morning - about 3am mountain time, I think.

I always say, head for where it is warm as a principle of life, that is why I don't live in Ohio, and haven't visited there since 1964.

Push those slow travelling 1990 GMC Suburbans in the left lane with flaky paint and the left turn signal flashing right out of the way with a well executed PIT manuever. WHOA, some idiot just knocked me off the highway with a well executed PIT manuever while I was heading for where it was warm in my 1990 GMC Suburban.

Scott

My epiphanies are arrived at at 1 AM my time 3 AM board time but it is still in the middle of the night.

For the record it is the inside lane and not the "Fast" lane.

If people knew how to "Merge" there's be more people in the "Right" lane(s). *&#@%!

And this:
It's got a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts,
4:11 gears that really get lost -
Safety tubes and I'm not scared,
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

For the record, it is the #1 lane, not the inside or fast lane. For cop purposes, the lanes on any road are numbered #1 (far left lane), #2 (lane to the right of #1, etc.

I personally believe that the 55 mph speed limit made this country into a nation of bad drivers. When I took driver's ed in 1970, I was taught that you use the #1 lane for passing, then move back over to the right. Keep moving to the right until people aren't passing you on the right. With the advent of the 55 mph speed limit, there was no passing lane and everybody just drove where they wanted to.

Nowdays on the highways, you see cars bunched up in the #1 and #2 lanes and people who are passing in the lanes further right.

I think this issue of the 'left' lane is the single BIGGEST cause of traffic, and it's a daily struggle of mine to maintain a &*($%! sense of peace about it.

I believe that it is the fault of those "elder instructors" who teach their kids of driving age the perception that the left lane is the "fast lane", and not the "passing lane". Somehow people feel justified to drive in that lane as long as they are going over the speed limit. Doesn't matter that you need to pass, they will not let you, if they even have a &$%&*! clue that you are even behind them.

Meanwhile, it is illegal to not yield the right of way to an overtaking vehicle. No one seemed to tell them that one in driver's ed.

My friend was 'racing' another car somewhere in the desert of Arizona ( I think). The cars were neck in neck doing over 100mph when they passed a cop. My friend, in the left lane, got pulled over. He didn't get a speeding ticket, but rather, got pulled over for failure to pass in the left lane.

Go figure.

Johnny

The "no passing on the right" law in California was repealed a couple of years back, I think with the intent of reducing the number of freeway shootings. All it has really done is turn the freeways into a slalom course for sedans and rollover testing grounds for the SUVs. The dolts in the left/fast/#1 lane don't move over because it's safest place to be when 1) knee-steering while 2) having the rear view mirror properly angled in order to put on makeup, shave, or pop zits.

On Interstate 5 through the middle of California it is ALWAYS faster to drive in the right lane than in the left, except during those times when it's primarily truckers on the road. Not because the trucks go slower (not usually the case), but because they understand road etiquette.

My wife and daughter (driving) got nailed a few months back for doing 96 over the Grapevine. The insurance agent was the one driven to drink ... champagne I think. :D

I've had a philosophy about Speed Limits. If you don't go more that 5 miles over the posted limit you will never get a ticket. So I'm one of those drivers who refuses to drive any faster that that.
However, I do have the common sense to move to the Right Lane.(Around here as in most places slower traffic keeps right.)Now i will switch lanes to pass some ridiculous slowpoke going at least 5 or 10 under the posted speed limit. But it drives me crazy when i try to pass and there are individuals in the left lane moving just about as slow and not pulling over to let people pass thus making traffic back up.Just like Most of you,it's hard to keep my sanity in those cases.

It's that little chip that kicks in and shuts off the fuel flow when your actual speed matches the speed rating of your tires. ;)

The speed limiter on my Ranger kicks in at 104. Ask me how I know. My tires are rated higher than that. Ford's thinking was, apparently, that it's unsafe to go faster than that in a truck that's light in the rear end. Of course, they accomplish this speed limiting by selectively cutting out cylinders. Which makes for a *(&# of a ride. I think that's more unsafe than speeding.

Oh that's what a speed limiter is. Mine kicks in on the benz at 155, at least that was the old one. They say the new one is at 189 but I think I'll take their word on it.
I was always taught that you drive in the left lane and pass in the right. It's what I continue to do unless the Saturn driver stays in the left and then I'll blow by in the right. My wife thinks I'm being rude when I fly by on the right and cut back in front and give the Italian salute disappearing into the horizon. (Of course you can't so that in they south, they'll shoot you)
Maybe she's right??.......

Aw heck, W-2, give it a try. After all, one needs to turn the Fender Twin up to 10 just to experience the sensation, right? :)

Of course, chips are replaceable and there are some good aftermarket ones out there. The lawyers always make the manufacturers err on the side of caution. Maybe you can get Mr. Callaway to do the setup. :D

I have similar problem with my wife ... emitting those little (and not so little) squeaks on occasion, and frequently slamming on the phantom brake pedal on the passenger side. She never seems to have the problem ... the big brush bar, PIAAs and top rack on her Land Rover seems to make people dart to the right lane when she's coming up on them.

Huh, when my wife used to think that I was about to convert us into a pile of twisted metal and shredded flesh, she tended to slam both hands into the cieling and scream epithets the likes of which would make sailors blush. Well, she used to. I got tired of it and started blipping the gas when she did that...negative reinforcement. 'Gee hon, when you freak out like that it distracts me and I think I'm stepping on the brake, but I miss and hit the gas. It'd be great if you could just trust my driving.'

Hasn't happened in a long time, but now that I've mentioned it, just watch...

Like a Twin on 10. Yes I've experienced that and the 155 several times. More than 155 is not really necessary. The scary thing about this new car is that when you lift your foot at say 120, the car stays at 120 and slowwlllly comes down. I find myself thinking about passing situations "how much speed will I still be carrying at the turn a half mile ahead?" I guess that's what 530 horses will do.

Anyhow, I spent part of the day with our illustrious leader, Mr. O, today at BikeTober Fest down in Daytona. Ya gotta love biker gatherings, no tofu burgers there! Got him hooked up with Tony Murga. Story at 11:00.

with a benz diesel wagon, passing is a moot point. i usually get behind a bus, put on some good music, let the bus run interference, and enjoy the 30 mpg.

but 530 ponies!! german stallions at that!! someday i have to experience that. i used to race drag cars in the 60's, but that felt like you were in the middle of a herd of stampeeding, life on the line power. i'll bet the benz whispers its way to the 3rd digit by comparison.

No veggie burgers either, just meat and more meat. There was some interesting meat walking around dressed in not much. I understand that if you don't chew it it can also be vegitarian? It's what somebady said.....
Miles and I had an interesting discussion about how companies market things, market share and all that spoo. Basically, think of Harley as Martin and go from there. Miles, as ya'll know, has a Victory bike. I just went to see Tony and get my new pair of golf shoes, a nice tan belly alligator. He's making some great jackets too but I don't want this to sound like an ad. If interested, check out his site www.murgaboots.com. If not, don't. He also has many Ovations (wonder where those came from!)

Here's my old Harley. It's registered as a '56 FL. I built it from parts. I first got it on the road 31 years ago. My newest one is an '80 80" FXWG Wide Glide.
