My 2001 S771 balladeer has an very dark, almost black, tightly grained fretboard. I was wondering if it could be some form of ebony? It's not the glossy stuff of ebony you see on higher end O's.

Do they stain the fretboards? It just seems so dark. It is darker than any rosewood fretboard I've seen on an acoustic and on par, if not slightly darker than my early 90's strats.

Seems like most rosewood you see on any guitar is very pale and washed out.

Maybe they just stained it? Seems like an extra step for an entry level satin balladeer.

I don't believe that they stain either the rosewood or ebony. I know ebony is very dense and usually won't take a stain.
The old Balladeers were ebony but I'm not sure what they were using on yours. Contact Kim Keller at the factory, maybe he can help you.
