Location: Agawam MA | I came accross one of these in pretty good condition. It looked as though it had not been played much in the last couple of years. The neck seems to join the body at the 16th fret. Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth owning? The string were so shot that I could not get a feel for how it would sound. Any advice or help would be great.
God bless,
Steve |

It's a cool looking stage guitar, not a front porch guitar. Like the current Viper, an acoustic guitar for electric guitar players. You don't buy it for the acoustic sound...... |

Location: East Wenatchee, WA | Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Just took a 1988 as a trade in on my 2080. I figure I am in it for about $100 more than the $300 you mentioned and mine has a repaired headstock and top crack, plus the case is seriously trashed.
That said, once I re-stringed and got the neck straight, the guitar isn't too bad. As expected with an SSB, the bass side is thin, but I was surprised to find that the sustain is on par with my Adamaii and it really doesn't sound too bad. I got it for my grandson who is 14 and "wanted something a little different" for his first guitar, so this one fits the bill perfectly. Volume acoustically was surprising to me. Certainly not the Deep or Contour bowls I have owned to date, but it would embarrass a couple of dreadnoughts I have played recently. Even his dad who previewed it thought it was as loud as his low budget Martin (dread cutaway...can't remember the model, but those $750 GC ones). The action can get better, but I want the guitar to stabilize over in his neck of the woods (I live in dry country, he in humid) for a couple of months, then I will revisit the action. Right now it is not bad, and I think it has the potential to get pretty low. The 16 frets are interesting and do not appear to hurt the tone, while improving upper fret access slightly. The Op24 electronics sound nice.
All in all....at $300 it is a decent instrument and has made me consider SSB's as a future option, especially for traveling as it is a pretty compact package. I think you are making a great deal. |

I went and examined it some more. The top is slightly bowed by about 1/8 to 3/16. The sound is poor unplugged. I plugged it in and the sound was very dissapointing. The tone was muddy and nothing that I could do with the OP-24 EQ seemed to help. The EQ did seem to be working. The case is in fair condition with the brightest blue plush interior.
If it had sounded decent I would have picked it up. However, I got concerned and am thinking about it. Any ideas as to what might be the culprit. Could the lousy strings account for this? I have 2 other guitars with OP-24s and they sing. I have never let let my strings approach the condition of these. |
