I have an Ovation COllector's 2000. However, I looked on the Ovation website at their Collector's guitars -- and the one i have is NOTHING like what Ovation lists. Mine doesn't have the spruce top listed. Mine has some kind of Australian Honey or lacewood -- something like that. VERY pretty guitar. DO I have a bogus guitar?

Interesting observation..... I believe that information on the Ovation site is incorrect. The 2000 Collectors' Edition DOES have a Lacewood top.

The model number just says:

Collector's 2000, #126

I believe the top is actually Australian Lacewood.

I think Paul is right. Never trust what you read on some corporate web site. Dave

Hizzoner, good luck getting them to do that or even admit it's wrong. Maybe if you hold them in contempt......
Good to see you back here by the way.

As far as bogus guitars go, I have never seen a high end knock off. There just isn't enough demand and the price isn't high enough. With 59 les Pauls going for $150-200K and original Vees for 100K+ there's lots of incentive to make forgeries. Ovation ain't anywhere near that league. All the knock offs are cheap shit. If you're familiar with USA made Ovations and think it's US made, it probably is.

Any of you hardcore Ovationites ever seen a USA made caliber knock off?

You are the perfect candidate to suggest that correction. The picture on the website for the 2000 Collectors' is of uncertain value. It doesn't look quite like Lacewood, but it doesn't look very much like Spruce, either.

I have had several of the 2000 Collectors', however, and they all have had the Lacewood tops. Some of them have a look like raindrops running down the top. Quite a distinctive look.

Ovation muddied the Collectors' waters in 2000 by introducing a Celebrity Deluxe Collectors' model, but it is very red in color and chock full of abalone. There is no confusing that one for the guitar on the site, either.

In response to CWK: I have never seen anyone try to counterfeit an Ovation. I suspect you are right in there being no money in it.

Unless Ed Roman bought a truck load of old bowls and necks.....

And can you imagine trying to copy Spruce with Lacewood? Sheesh....

I have a 2000 Collector's ... indeed it is Australian Lacewood in a Transparent Honey finish ("raindrops" ... I like that description). To be honest, I thought it was Lacewood veneer on a solid spruce top, with matching veneer on the headstock. But whatever, I really like the way it looks, feels, plays, and sounds. Knock-off or not. ;)

I now remember playing Bobbo's guitar one night in the lobby of the hotel during last year's Tour (shameless plug - SIGN UP NOW!! - sorry:-)

"Raindrops" - I like that too, Bob. Very befitting of that guitar.

A VERY pretty, nice-sounding guitar.
Very nice to play to, if memory serves.

;)

Your remember correctly, Cliff! Looking forward to seeing you at this year's tour ... hope everyone here makes the last minute decision and sells the tour out!

I took the back hole off and looked at the underside of the top ... hmmmm, it's mahogany. It's not the same pattern as the lacewood top (although both woods are from the same "family"), but definitely not spruce, so I'm not sure what to make of the whole thing. Is it ply? Is it solid mahogany with the lacewood cap? Maybe someone from the factory or one of the on-board experts knows the answer.

cwk2: If I could hold them in contempt, I would! :)

Seriously, it is a SWEET guitar -- one of the best Ovations I've ever owned or played. I was just extremely disappoinmted that the "official" website would have such a blatant error.

It is a transparent honey finish. When I bought it, there were three at the store. No two finishes on this guitar are alike.

Raindrops! Yeah... I like that too.

I have had a half dozen, or so, of the 2000 Collectors'. All were nice, a couple were stunning.

And I inquired of Kim Keller as to the laminate, as well as pointing out the website erratum. I will post any info I get.

First, the website has been corrected. It now describes, correctly, the 2000 Collectors' as having a top of Figured Lacewood.

Second, Kim is going to check on the what the Lacewood is laminated on to.

A friend of mine gets his guitars worked on somewhere in Dallas. Apparently it's a good used guitar place with an excellent technician.

I drive carefuly these days! The Ovation dealer and repair shop I've used up here is Earhart's Electronics in Ft. Worth. They've done good work for me and I bought my 1867 Legend for a very good price from them...

We should organize an OFC-Texas get together! My cousin and her husband own this "ghost town" place right outside of Palestine that has a Saloon, they bought the whole kit-n-kaboodle at an auction last year. I've thought about hitting them up to do a music get together - would include a lot of friends that always go to Kerrville Folk Festival...

OK, getitng off the thread here, I'll start a new one about that....

The Ovation website now shows the top as "Figured Lacewood". That was fast! W2 ... someone has learned to kick some serious marketing tail these days ... or maybe they were nervous about spending time in a Texas Cross-Bar Hotel courtesy of Hizzoner Hizzoner.

If the whole thread is read, it will be noticed that I wrote Kim Keller a couple of days ago and simply mentioned the fact that the website was wrong in the details of the 2000 Collectors'. The change does not seem to have been the result of Ovation management reading this thread.

This is not to diminish the importance of their observation, nor is it to take credit, myself. I am simply pointing out that the matter was mentioned to Kim and he passed the info on to the web administrator, who made the change.

Kim rocks!

Is that Michael Earhart's shop? He's a great guy and a great fingerpicker. Last year we played together in Denton TX backing a gospel buddy of mine, Clark Byron. Michael played lead and I was strumming for all I was worth on a Nashville strung Custom Legend.

I bought my Legend and Genz-Benz from them!

I dealt a 1973 Gibson Hummingbird Custom (original owner) for it and it's the best thing I've done in a very long time!
