Can't forget the Silver Fox, Charlie Rich. His story was typical for musicians, struggled for years and hit it big, his wife stuck by him through good and bad.

Jamie Cullum. (I presume he counts as keyboard!).

One other point - Nils, thanks for mentioning Victor Borge. I've just been inspired to dig out a DVD of him that I have, which has brightened my morning!

Here's to a peaceful and laughter-filled 2005.

Interesting point,
In both this post and the one on basses nobody mentioned Greg Lake or Keith Emerson. I'm not a big fan of theirs either buit I thought they'd at least get a mention.

Bill, you didn't read the fine print. Emerson automatically gets the #1 spot by default. We were all just commenting on who should be #2.

Greg Lake? I don't know. He was a guitar player converted out of necessity to bass. Don't think he could stand on his own as a bassist. On his solo LP's he plays mostly guitar and hired someone else to track the bass parts.

McCartney was also a guitarist who took over the bass duties out of necessity ... but then some people just have "it" when it comes down to playing just about everything. McCartney is one of those, as is Todd Rundgren and Lenny Kravitz.

Speaking of bass - My vote goes to the chick on "Battle For Ozzfest". Too bad Sharon gave her the boot last episode.

Saw Edgar Winter in July last year at a benefit Motorcycle run. That ol' dude stole the show! Can't believe he still jumps around with that huge Rolland hanging on him.

Love Lee Michaels version of Stormy Monday. He and Frosty kick up a storm.
Max Middleton was great on those two Beck albums.

". . Bob Mayo! . . . on keyboards, Bob Mayo!! . . "
- Peter Frampton

I believe that I mentioned Greg Lake in the bass thread . . . while he might not be considered a "virtuoso", he does do rather well (his 8-string Alembic work on "Pirates" comes to mind . . )

Two keyboard favorites of mine: Lionel Ritchie and Michael McDonald. Both build a foundation for their vocal performance on strong chord progressions and just enough connecting notes to tie everything together. Huge impact though.
