OK, we have asked just about everything else so here is another one.

When not playing, where do you place your picks?

On most of my guitars I place it between the strings around the 2nd fret but I also sometimes place them behind the nut.

On my Jazz guitar, I purchased (don't remember where) a little rubber pad like creation that slides between the middle strings behind the nut. Then there are 2 rubber slots (one on each side) that allows you to slide your pick in and out of the way. At first I really disliked this approach but now I am beginning to like it the best.

Anyone else want to share??

Stephen: I do the same as you except at the first fret.

I also have those rubber pads. I originally intended to use those when I play to store extra picks, but that didn't work out to well.

I use this:

I got it a bunch of years ago from the gift shop at the Cathedral of St. John the Devine in NYC. It's made of Indian Rosewood and the slide-open top has the Cathedral's massive stained-glass Rose Window laser-etched into it.
It's designed/sold as a "pill box", but it will hold a goodly supply of picks of varying size and thickness . . .

(I just realized: the white Johnson MOTS pick on top is one that I inadvertantly "clipped" from cwk2 this weekend . . . . sorry, Bill ;-)

Ah, the beauty of O-wnership. The Dunlop spring activated pickholders with the adhesive pad work great on the Lyrachord bowl. they remove and clean up without issue. I would never use one on a wooden surface. All of my roundbacks have them. They run $2-$3.

For the solidbodies Dunlop has a rubberlike in line thingy that attaches to the strap and holds 6 picks.

Other mandatory accessories include the Dunlop straplock fittings and matching parts on the straps. Each guitar has it's own coordinating strap.

Then place them on the wall with the String-Swings.

I keep my bulk picks on a shelf in my studio............the one a play with at the time is placed in between the guitar strings on the guitar...........I saw that somewhere and thought it was a neat place to have your pick!

Probably all folks do it for easy/fast access.

I keep 'em on the bedside table, on the desk, in the little pocket that's on Levi's, out in the garage, on the dresser, in my guitar case....

HEY! Anybody of you kids seen any of my light gauge, gray, textured picks??? Time for some strumming....

Seriously, for on stage, my bandmate bought me one of those pick holders you put on the mic stand as I use several different kinds depeding on playing rhthym, electric, bass, etc.....

My pick use is becoming less and less. (See the "Do You Use A Pick" thread)
I keep them everywhere. Pockets, bookshelves, kitchen counter, work desk, and the coin holder in my truck. My wifes says that if I ever get lost, all I have to do is back track the trail of wayward picks.
Cliff...that is a very cool pick holder.

I'm not as smart as you guys. I just keep them in my pocket with my change. I always have them when I can grab a quick 15 minutes to play.
If I had a fancy little wooden box, I'd probably still keep it in my pocket with my change.
By the way, I've learned that a placing a pick in a vending machine will not get you a can of Pepsi. Darn Pepsi machines.

I have a little chipboard box on the coffee table with picks, capo, string winder, pens and pencils, toothpick and Q-tips and maybe a Bic lighter or 2. I stick them between the strings, too somewhere near the nut.

I have one of those Dunlop spring loaded holders full of picks but it's not on any guitar. I think it's on the end table next to the lamp. It was stuck to the lamp for a while.

Otherwise I keep an assortment in my pocket if I'm going to play in front of people. And stick a spare between the strings on the headstock if I'm gonna be rockin. If I remember that is.

As much as I TRY to keep 'em somewhat "orderly and contained", they're STILL all over the place - drawers, floors, counters, carpets, cars, desks. My co-workers are constantly finding 'em in the office hallways and returning 'em to me.

Jeanette has a little jar on the shelf in the laundry room specifically for holding guitar picks (and those little elastic ponytail thingies) of mine that she fishes out of the dryer filter . . .

I keep them in the watch pocket of my dungarees. they never seem to get lost and go through the wash just fine.

sue has a bowl on top of one of my stereo speakers that gets loaded with strays.

I prefere fender extra heavy tortise shell but often pick up picks all over the place and they get deposited in the bowl.

I still have a wooden pick that a guy that was on this board sent me and then got upset with my review of the product. I like it and would probably get another but doubt if he would talk to me. life goes on.

I keep a pick in each and every guitar I have, and keep it threaded between the first and third strings at about the second fret. When I'm playing seriously, I thread a second pick between the first and third strings just above the nut to get to it if I lose the pick I'm using. When I fingerpick, the pick goes between my teeth, although I've been able to master getting it just moist enough to stick it to my lower lip.

For storage, I have a nice little tin box I got with a 5 pack of D'Addario electric strings that's handy for storing picks in the studio, and I also have a similar box from Dunhill cigarettes that get used on the other side of the room. They both snap shut which keep the little buggers from migrating. Of course, I always find packages of Fender picks inside the storage bin in guitar cases when I venture in there, too.

Yep, that watch pocket is amazing... they should call it a "pick pocket" but that's already been used. I also keep picks in trays and bowls all over the studio and control room. or just laying around. My favorites I keep on a storage box that never moves, but one of my little goals in the studio was to never have to go hunting for a pick.

Al, I had one of those wooden picks, too, but the wife managed to lose it when we did the last move. Picks end up in my pocket, on the dresser, and on the shelf in the music room, and a few get lost somewhere, like the wooden pick did.

One in the watch pocket of my jeans. One in the opposite pocket of my jeans. One on the coffee table. One on the kitchen counter. Two on the TV stand in front of the TV. One or two on top of my chest of drawers. One or two in the case. One conveniently woven between the strings of my guitar. And I invariably need to look in three or four places before I find one because my wife tends to pick up the ones that I have strategically placed, and then she relocates them to places where I can't find them.

Yes Paul,
That's the gizmo I was talking about that I said fit between the strings above the nut.

Didn't think I liked it at first but I am starting to come around to its brilliance!

Well, guess I'm not alone...I have atleast 100+ picks all over the house, in both autos, at the office(I often take a guitar to work)There is alwaysafew around the washing machine and a few in the dryer. I think there are a few in the bathroom because I love the acoustics! My wife even asked me one time why she found a pick in the shower? I had no clues....
Several friends have returned picks several time I left at their house, they don't play but saved them because people who don't play think picks are special and must be returned. :D

I am glad you sell a ton of wedgies but I just don't get that product. We all talk about how important strings are and the top vibrating and the length of strings etc and then you are going to wedge a big ass piece of rubber between the strings to soak up vibrations???
not I.

Al, the really important thing is what goes on between the nut & bridge. What goes on between the nut & tuners is pretty much irrelevant, unless the break-angle behind the nut is too shallow and you get unwanted resonance (this is why Fender-type guitars have string trees) in which case the Wedgie would actually be a benefit.

I think the most important spot is between the nut behind the pick, and the strings.

I am seeing a nasty trend here and I want to look out for you guys and gals. First I agree with Miles and the loose nut behind the pick is the most important part. Take a little Rabbit trail with me if you will.

There is a theory in accident prevention that says for every 300 instances of poor attitude/operation there are about 29 cases of minor accidents and 1 case of a severe accident occuring in the work place. That is a 1 out of 10 chances of a mishap occuring when you are being complacent!

If you are one of the Boneheads laying picks all over the place please consider that for every ten times you do this an "event" may occur such as a spouse or partner being irritated to some extent.

Every ten times you are the cause of this irritation it is most likey going to result in a serious irritation. this is when things like "You have too many @#$*! guitars" or "If I see another !#@$%&* in my lint trap there will be $%&@ to pay".

Blaming your spouse for the loss of one of your favorite picks is a definite no-no as well.

I care about you all. Please practice safe musicianship. Friends don't let Friends get their stuff scattered on their lawns!

Peace

All over the house. Back pocket, Wallet on the left, Picks on the right (right handed). When playing out usually stuck to the top. Double sticky tape so I don't drop while playing, and to stick to the guitar for finger picking, and travel. Happy New Year!!

My name is Bailey, and I am a pickaholic

I confess that I assign a pick to each guitar and mandolin, and I store that pick at the third fret. Sometimes at night, when the muse has got me, I will switch from mandolin to guitar or acoustic guitar to electric guitar and as God watches me, I will stick a pick in my pocket or leave it on a table where it will surface in the AM, causing great consternation as I realize that that instrument is SETTING IN IT'S CASE WITHOUT IT'S PICK. I must then open it's case and replace the pick correcting the problem so my life can go on. The fear is showing up at a gig without the proper pick, even though I have quit playing gigs.

I also have waves of remorse because I have lost or misplaced my stone pick, ameliorated somewhat by the great Adamas picks that an OFC member sent me that stand in reserve to fill in if needed because of my carelessness.

My name is Bailey, I am a pickaholic  ;)

Admitting you have a problem is the first step!

My favorite picks are the off-white Ovation Fan club picks - no lie!

I'm with Woodrow. I use the off white OFC pics. They are the same size and density as Fender mediums, but the special OFC print gives them a special balance and weight. I don't expect most people to be that sensitive to their picks......

Yes I was sick as pointed out.

Just when I thought I was cured, MWoody and Moodypi brought up the OFC picks that I didn't know about.

A new vintage, steeped in tradition, aged in oak casks, promising a descent into pick nirvana.

I will seek these out and reverently place them in my guitars and mandolins and obsess over which one goes where and which one to secretly carry in my pocket and flash at the pretty checkout clerk as I pull out my change so I can hear her gasp "OFC, omigod a guitar god like Al".

My pickaholic obsession has been rekindeled and it's back to sin and degredation, (I really, really love it)

Call me an enabler, but contact Miles about the pics.

By the way, I keep a pic with each guitar and all my guitars are out on stands or on the wall. Bill would be proud of me. Everything gets picked up and played every week.

my doom is sealed

I have fallen off the wagon and ordered a dozen OFC picks (curse you moodypi).

I will now look forward to wallowing in the depths of degradation, after all, you can't be cured until you hit the bottom.

BTW, does anybody know if Dunlop has a web site where those pretties can be procured.

I now have began the 12 pick program (the OFC's come by the dozen) once you have faced your addiction and owned up to it, then you can indulge with no remorse.

I will sleep tonight with blue and cream picks floating through my dreams and choosing their guitars without my having the anguished pressure of having to choose which one goes where and possibly assigning a cream pick to a blue guitar, therefore upsetting the balance of nature as happened when I accidentally put my electric guitar pick in my new mandolin early this year causing Florida to suffer through terrible hurricanes.

The first thing to do is buy picks by the gross, 2 or 3 at a time. Then you have all those little cool stash boxes no longer used. Fill them up with picks and leave them everywhere. (That way when guests come over they can help themselves) I find that I play with my fingers most of the time now so I don't leave any in the guitars. But on a tray on the music room table, on the winder sill by the main guitar chair, also by the secondairy guitar chair, downstairs music room winder sills, all of them, in Fla over the fireplace or in several small bowls on tables or my dresser. Every two years buy another 3 gross of picks, whether you need them or not. I get these white mot Johnson picks from Don's Pawn shop here in Jax, most interesting music store in town.

You know, I'm no friggin genious when it comes to marketing (well, actually that IS my day job) but anyway, if I were in charge of Ovations marketing to the big box stores, I'd go to every damn one of them and put a huge fish bowl of Ovation logo'd picks in their acoustic rooms. It costs next to nothing. And every person who comes in there to play the guitars (and maybe actually BUY one) is gonna use them, steal them, whatever. Even if the idiot buys a Taylor, I want him walking out of there with a few Ovation picks in his pocket. It's dozens and dozens of simple little things like this that add up over time. Artist Endorsement, Product Placement, Paid Reviews, and on, and on.

Ohh Man thats funny! My old wooden box is pretty beat up but I still have it.

It is full of picks and strap locks etc. etc.

I am spending a lot of time in front of a Mic now so I bought one of those little holders that slip to the Mic Stand.
On my Ric bass there is a small gap between the pick guard and the bass pickup. I stick a heavy pick in there for a spare.

Now that my Daughters are playing I bought a bunch, I hate it when I do not have my favorite picks.
My youngest calls them "Chips"!

i found some small black 2x2.5 leather snap pouches with a key ring on them designed to carry a folded up bill in so you aren't broke (monekey). i have one on each guitar strap and have one on my house key set. each carries a half dozen picks and a folded up 500 peso note. the working pick is always between the strings. but ya know those nights that a tortex orange just wont cut it-----dig out a yellow.

i have about 5 or 6 extras if anyone wants one (no picks or money included).
