Everyone has there favorite Ovation and for various reasons. Mine has become my Burgundy 1777LX Legend I bought last year. For handling, sound, feel and appearance both plugged and unplugged it has become my my main axe for pboth playing out and in! And the band played on!

My 1771-LX. I sold my Alvarez and gave away my Yamaha because they were both gathering dust.

My '71 Balladeer
reasons.

1) Char bought for me for my birthday. B4 we were married.

2) my first Ovation (lusted after for years.)

3) it is wired passively and sounds spectacular plugged or not.

4)Still major WOW factor. finish is like glass on top and neck but 2 age cracks.(tho the new elite from John catching up fast.)

5) built like a tank..scratch that ROTOR.

6)this is the guitar I always introduce my friends to first. or let friends or neighborhood kids borrow.(again durability, playability, low $ investment).

7) know that if I'm out island hopping in the indian river or lagoons around here and the outboard quits i can always use it to.....

Everybody sing!!!

8) and oh yeah....

It brought me here.

God Bless all,

GLENN

My favorite (so far) is the Elite. I haven't played it in two weeks and picked it up tonight. Jeebuz, them's some heavy strings. But, the sound...nothing comes close. Not even the $4500 Taylor with flame rosette and flame inlaid fretboard I played for fifteen minutes tonight (no, it's not mine). Very nice guitar, but it wans't my Elite.

like I said...the elite's coming up fast. really fast....but is a 12 so not as versatile.(not for this beginner)

so I guess now I have to find a 6 string version.
(that's what I'm telling Char anyway.) don't think she's buying it.

Darn gas don't you love it.

Glenn-

Just make sure that you get it in the -4 finish! For an Elite, it's 'only natural!'

Has been my 1117-4 ,but may be replaced by the 1112-1 that I just got today. More on that later. Cruster, where's Midland, spent the day working in Temprence.Lambertville, and Ottawa Lake. Lots of snow and horrible roads!

My Burgandy 1777LX is my main squeeze. I just love the way it sounds while recording under a high quality condenser mic. This is an Ovation guitar that you don't have to "Get Plugged in" to appreciate the rich acoustic sound. The folks at the Mothership got a winner with this one. I also love my 1868T, plugged in.

Please don't laugh because it is my CSD-215 Doubleneck.
1. Curly maple top makes it distictive
2. Absolutely love playing both necks on various songs.
3. Plugged in it is really very good. Acoustic ok
4. To the point now a single neck guitar doesn't feel right.
5. The body size is really right for a double they made it 3/4 and the width makes up for the reduced length.

Viper (EA68). Can play it acoustic-like or can play it electric-like. The more I play it, the more I like it.

Congrats to Stephen (StephenT28) as he just bought one of my 1537's (302433) and one of my 1719-30CM's. Now, he'll have two great candidates for "All Purpose Ax!"

Time to revise the 1537 list.

I probably play the 2002 as much as all the other guitars I have combined. It doesn't sound quite as good as the 1612 unplugged but the neck is a little faster & it's a cutaway. With the African Cherry top it's a pretty SOB too. I don't play out often but when I do people notice that guitar. I got compliments on both it's looks & sound (plugged in) at New Years.

edit: They liked the sound of the guitar, I'm not so sure they were all that impressed with the way I was playing it :)

My Viper

I get all infatuated with some other electric, and then I find it's limits and revert to my Viper for it's versatility and quality. I think close to 30 years of hearing it is sorta like being married, everything else looks good but disappoints when you get close and hear it after the makeup comes off and the sun comes up. Then the quality of the faithful Viper calls me home.

It has to be my 1995 Celebrity Deluxe cutaway.

I can do anything with it - fingerpicking, plectrum strumming, plugged or unplugged. In times of dire need (broken string in a gig) it's always there as a backup, and I have been known to play overdriven rock solo's on it.

Not only that, but it was my first O, and led me to many other things.

I usually refer to my guitars by "he" or "she" though. Is this wrong (in a creepy way?). Some are most definately female, and some are very male.

My 1617. Year after year. Decade after decade, she takes a beatin' and keeps on singin'! Only one neck adjustment in 25 years being lugged all over the country demands loyalty. I love my sunburst baby.

My S771 Balladeer... tough as nails, great tone, not too expensive to replace ... if.... :(

When I need a "shimmering wall of sound", it's my Balladeer 6751-12 (currently loaned to a Church member's daughter who is learning guitar and had never heard of a 12-string... I think her father now hates me!) :D

But, when I need to add the "wowie zowie" factor, I get out the 2001 Redwood... does it every time.

My "favorite" Ovation (if I had to narrow it down to one) is my '81 Custom Legend; but my all purpose guitar, and the one I often refer to as my workhorse, is my '89 Elite.

My favorite is a 2000 Custom Legend #1869. It is a killer guitar plugged in, is a perfect guitar to play standing up, and is rich enough sounding to use au naturale in group settings. I have been spoiled by onboard tuners, so it would be hard to go back.

Now, if I can just it get back from the factory where it was sent for a crack repair..... My Elite #1868 has been a noble substitute, but I do prefer the sound of the #1869.

My all purpose Ovation?

I guess it is my old sunburst 1981 Country Artist 1624, non cutaway and with the older preamp.

It is the one I take to jams, radio interviews, practices, vacation trips and most studio sessions. It is non cutaway and sounds better unplugged than my other CAs cutaways. Must be because it has been played a lot.

I have other Ovations and Adamas that I use on stage and studio sessions when I want a specific tone, but the old sunburst CA is the one that lives in a stand, ready to go out with me most of the time.

Serge,
Reading your post brought a question to mind. You said you take an Ovation to places like radio interviews, and recording sessions. Do you ever get comments or questions on your instrument of choice? I'd like to think that at your level there is more acceptence of an instrument no matter what the design or construction.
This question comes on the heels of a comment that was directed to myself and my open mic partner. As we were waiting to go up, another participant looked at us and said, "You're not going to play those are you?" (I have a DiMeola and my buddy has an Adamas) In a fine example of karma, he got up there later and used the "house" Taylor. Yep...out of tune.
p.s. It's 51 degrees with thunderstorms here in the Detroit area. By friday it will drop to 10 degrees. Do you miss Michigan?

THATS RIGHT.

Do you ever get comments or questions on your instrument of choice?

NOT FROM INDUSTRY PEOPLE ANYMORE, (LIKE SOUND OR RECORDING ENGINEERS, RADIO DJS, ETC), BUT YES, MOSTLY FROM SOME OTHER GUITAR PLAYERS THAT HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ME AND SOME SNOBS THAT THINK THAT IF A GUITAR IS NOT AN EXPENSIVE WOODEN INSTRUMENT IS A CHEAP PIECE OF CRAP.

I'd like to think that at your level there is more acceptence of an instrument no matter what the design or construction.

SURE, THERE ARE MANY SNOBS THAT STILL PUT OVATIONS DOWN, AND WHEN THEY MAKE A NEGATIVE COMMENT I JUST SAY, "SOUNDS GREAT, DOESN'T IT?" MEANING, "LISTEN CHOMP, HOW I CAN MAKE THIS GUITAR SOUND GREAT AND DO THE JOB"

KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST STUDIO SESSIONS I DO ARE JINGLES OR SOMEONE THAT WANTS ME AS A GUEST ON SOME RECORDING, SO THEY REALLY DON'T CARE WHAT I BRING AS LONG AS IT IS ME PLAYING.
OF COURSE IF IT'S A MASTER RECORDING BY A MAJOR ARTIST OR A SOUNDTRACK I BRING THIS CA IN ADDITION TO MANY OTHER GREAT GUITARS I OWN.

p.s. It's 51 degrees with thunderstorms here in the Detroit area. By friday it will drop to 10 degrees. Do you miss Michigan?

WELL, MAYBE YOU ARE MISTAKING ME WITH FOLKLORE THAT LIVES IN DETROIT AND MET ME IN SAN ANTONE.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO MICHIGAN MYSELF. :D

My favorite Ovation is also my favorite guitar. It is my 1979 Viper (solid body). I am its original owner and it has never known another daddy.

Hey StandingOvation, I see you are from Phoenix. I am from just down the road on the West side.

I had duplicate tenors.

For guitar, my current all purpose axe is FD-14, but that tend to change regularly.

Since I had to send the '68 GCDB back to the mothership a few months ago for a new five-point bridge, I also had them retro-fit a thinline, high-output pickup into the new bridge.
It was already the most 'played-at-home' guitar so now that I'm doing more gigs with it, it's the most played in my little stable, period.

I agree I just bought my this xmas and it's the best thing I every did. Truely great sounds and great play-of-ability. Was really impressed with the workmenship and the toneality of the instructment. Paid $800 with case. Thought that was a great deal from Guitar Center. Recommend this instrument to anybody.

My all-time "utilitarian" gutar would have to be my CBalladeer, basically because it's a six-string and is an A/E.

My SlotHead hangs on a wall at the top of the stairway and it's really not in a spot that's conducive t'just "grab & play". I have to block out a time and place to do so. I usually will bring it down and noodle with it on my lap while I'm on the computer at home.

Lately, I've been gigging just about every weekend, so it's been easier for me to just leave the CBalladeer and my Legend12 in their cases by the door in my music room downstairs. When I want/need to practice/learn something, lately I've been picking up the Q10 that's been wintering at my house from Bill.

Last night, I was re-stringing my gig guitars and figured while I was at it, I'd re-string the Q.
This was my first opportunity to have KarnEvil Knowledge with this guitar. Man!! . . what a piece of guitar engineering!! I laboriously poured over this thing with my computer vac, canned air, Qtips, and a generous amount of Dun65 lovingly rubbed with a worn, gossamer-thin, grey heather-tone t-shirt from the Yes "90215" Tour (my favorite guitar cloth). While I had the guitar laid-out on the towel-covered dining room table with an overhead light, and I was giddily marveling that the gold tuners with the ebony buttons had absolutely ZERO(!) "slop" in the turn mechanisms, Jeanette walked by, rolled her eyes and muttered "Why don't you two get a *&%%@# ROOM!" :D

A new set D'Add EJ16's, and this thing just KILLS!
By the time I was finished with all my carressing and probing, and got it re-strung, it was late so I brought it down to my "dungeon" to bring it back up to pitch. It's probably just my imagination, but I've NEVER played a guitar that stayed in tune so quickly with new strings on it. If I "tweaked" two strings over the course of the night, it was a lot. This is a guitar that's extremely hard to put down and walk away from . . . it just "coaxes" you to PLAY!
If you like to play standing with a stap, this is the guitar for it. It's smooth, it's rounded, it's sleek, it's just . . . . SEXY!

(uh, . . . . . . I gotta go now . . . . .)

- Don't worry Al, I will have a full compliment of detailed photos to you before the Winter's over . . .
