Steph,
The Ultra has a Laminate(Non Solid Top) The Baladeer has a solid Top. The result of course is that the solid top will age(sound better) the more it's played. The laminate top will not not age. From what I understand the ultra models are nice though. Several members either own or have owned the ultra models.

I believe that by 1986, the Ultra line was made in Korea. The answer from Steve is right on. I do have an Ultra and it is a nice guitar for what it is. Another difference between the USA Ultra and the Balladeer is the neck ... the Ultra came with the Urelite neck while the Balladeer had a mahogany (two piece I think) neck.

..i don't remember the exact year when ovation switched to the 2-piece balladeer neck, but my first silver label custom balldeer had the 5-piece mohogany/maple neck and it was rock-sturdy...i had the frets replaced and dressed many times, recently sold it to my cousin for 300 bucks and he was very happy to get it...i still think there is no comparison between the old balladeers and the new ultra's, celebrity's, pinnacles, etc..
