UPS will get back to me this afternoon as to why.
So, possibly damaged or a security factor with this or other packages. |

I'd like to think it was shipped between a couple of Fender Stratacoustics and the OHSC took all the latent energy!
Hopefully a good story with a better ending. |

So $3 a day for 365 days = $1095 or the Price of a New LX every year you stay a quitter! |

I like Woody's little math exercise. Too bad I wasn't a 2 pack-a-day smoker ... here in California that would add up to a #47 reissue a year. |

Cheap advice, but make sure you develop a habitual behavior that is incompatible with smoking behavior. Like jogging, or some other thing that is directly affected by the frequency of the addictive behavior. Eseentially, you substitute one compulsive behavior, for another. It's OK, everybody's "strung out" on something, anyway. I took up tennis after a 23-year hiatus. Really sped up the pulmonary rehab, too.
Now, back to our regularly-scheduled program......I'm turning various shades of green, visualizing the permanent grin Tony must have with his new acquisition. Keep the faith, Guys- we're all bozos on the same bus! |

Has the OP-Pro with XLR!! I understood it was coming w/o XLR. BUY IT!!
I had originally called it a "plain Jane" from the pictures. It is eloquent in its simplicity. The Englemann spruce, inlaid abalone and ivory rosette, ebony fingerboard, and ebony bridge - nice.
I forgot to check out the bowl until I had tuned it...not as radical as I thought. Comfortable feel and, as we know, great features for the engineering department. Only 2005 model with the new bowl. For the deep bowl guys like myself, no problem - great projection.
As to the quality of construction - great. Setup is great - intonnation at 12th fret is perfect.
As to the "voice" - full and bright.
It is an improved LX!! IMHO, a lot better than the 1777LX I played for a couple of hours a few months ago.
My recommendation is buy it!! As far as I know, Al is the only source to get it now before about March. Stephen and Craig will soon have theirs.
No time as this is a busy day...know I will spend several hours with it tonight. |

the new rosette design looks good, but it looks like a taylor w/ abalone rosette. almost direct copy!
the original ovation rosette is the most beautiful rosette in the world. hope ovation will keep it. |

Distinctive, will never be confused with a Taylor in appearance, pre-amp, or as an acoustic.

Tony, how does it compare to your 30th CL and to your 1537? |

Location: SoCal | Been too busy answering emails concerning the guitar to play it much...it isn't a 30th Anniv or a 1537 and can't be compared with either. Both are classic in their own right. It can, however, stand in the same company.
It is the closest to the deep bowl, AAA spruce, OP-Pro w/XLR, center hole, cutaway Al DiMeola ADII. And, that is saying a lot!
Background - I had the 2004 ADII DiMeola for two weeks. Played it a lot. Then, I sold it to Jim, Serge's performing partner. I did it because Jim was told by the factory that he would have to wait months and, IMHO, the guitar should be on stage. I was in the process of getting another ADII.
Then, I got the Collector's in today...called Al this afternoon and told him that I wasn't going to order the DiMeola.
The Collector's is that good. You don't need to play it for hours. Pick up a guitar...it looks good, feels good (weight, gloss neck, balance), run through some "cowboy chords", a few barr chords, some scales - you know you have a great guitar. With the XLR, it is obvious that Ovation designed it for the stage.
Get a chance like Stephen (and me) to get a 1537, 30th Anniv CL, and Collector's - go for it. You'll never be satisfied with only part of the collection.
30th Anniv CL is still my favorite ;) :p ;)
Ovation has a great future with the LX and new bowl, worthy of the past. My compliments to the crew at the mother ship. Thanks Al, Paul, Dave, and Matt for checking it out and giving us feedback. I wasn't going to get it until I heard their endorsements. |

Actually, I am torn with which guitars will belong to that magical group. I pulled out my '91 1681 Adamas II tonight and played it for about 1/2 hour, then the 1537, then the 30th CL, then back to the 1681. The 1681 fits right in and trys real hard to climb to the top.
If I had to rate them right now while each is fresh in my mind.........
30th CL...definately the easiest to play with a smooth trebly sound and a nice bottom.
1537...more difficult neck to play but a fuller woody sound that is slightly bottom heavy but with a crystal clear top.
1681...neck is very similar to the 1537 and plays just about the same. Has a very even sound across the board. Good highs w/excellent lows and a crisp mid.
Each is a beauty in its own way. The 30th CL is definately my choice for fingerpicking and the other two would be my choice for strumming or flatpicking.
Where will the '05 fit into this wonderful mix.
The beauty of the "O"s...great versatilty for a great price :) |

He also has two FRG 2005 Collector's coming in next week - that has got to be a great deal!!

Whatta YOU think ???
Historically I have not been a fan of "new" just for the sake of "new". The old shiny bowls and adamas are fine for me. Over the past few years have gotton rid of almost all the other k-bars, shallows, v-braces, etc. in the collection. None of them were "special" and more than a few of them actually sounded terrible. Never a fan of the collectors series in general. The only one I owned was the little '97 but got rid of that in favor of non-Ovation small body. The FD14 has been the only "new" product I really latched onto. I was impressed with the idea and progress of the LX series but had no desire to own any of them.
But then this '05 Collector comes along. On paper seems to have all the right ingredients. Then played it at NAMM and was mightily impressed. Although never considered that I should get one. Then the reviews start rolling in from more and more people playing and owning them. I convinced myself that this was going to be BIG! The contour bowl will take over the line. I predict for 3-5 years that Ovation will try to hold onto the original bowl shape as the "traditional series" or "vintage re-issues", blah, blah, blah. But it'll never work. The writing is one the wall. The contour is THAT good and it will just steamroll anything in its path. So imagine 30 years from the now the collectable value of the FIRST contour model obtained in the first month of availability ??? Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Plus for the next 30 years I've got a damn nice guitar to play with.

1st, I was told that the serial number would be low 3 digit....this meant to me maybe 104, 110, 120, etc.....
SN = #021 :D Unbelievable!
2nd. It is probably the most comfortable Ovation I have ever played from the feel of the body up against me. The contoured bowl really has a cozy, snug fit to it and it feels very secure..no chance of it slipping off!
3rd. The looks are very plain yet elegant. The single abalone on the 12 fret is very subtle yet has a quite beauty to it and the rosette radiates the various colors very nicely. Very Stately and Regal!
4th. The sound is big and full...much bigger than the bowl size would suggest. The neck plays very nice and I found that running leads or scales was effortless. The neck did seem a bit longer to me than some of the other "O"s that I have. I know this is just an illusion I can't explain but I did feel that it was a bit more difficult to play open chords than on some of my other "O"s. The projection is outstanding and plugged in to an acoustic amp just sounded fantastic! Again, I found myself running lead lines for what seemed about 5 minutes but what was in reality about 30 minutes.....it was that smooth and effortless.
5th How does it compare to the 30th Anniversary Legend, 1537, and 1681. Well, it is certainly in the same neighborhood but maybe just a notch below. I may change my mind after I have played it for a few weeks/months and let the sound come alive a little more. The open chording is still weirding me out....maybe just the way I was playing today and tomorrow it might feel fantastic.
OVERALL, the '05 is a definite grab. Great guitar for the money and it absolutely will find a place in my rotation. If you get a chance to own one, don't hesitate. |

The guy in charge of the NAMM auction specifically said that he didn't have the guitar but Kaman was sending it and it would be in the 100's.
I'm okay with the #035 but the other guys should have gotten lower numbers than those in the 100's. UNSAT! |

I was definately shocked by #21, especially since I was told it would be in the low hundreds.
I am not so sure that the guitar I received maybe wasn't the one on display at NAMM. It would explain the lower serial number and also the fact that it shipped out to me almost a week after they said it would.
Does anyone that went to NAMM and played the guitar remember looking at the serial number?
Anyway, I totally agree that the people that placed the '05 on preorder should be receiving the lowest serials. I wonder how much the size of the order plays into it. Maybe the overseas market says "I will place an order for 100 of the '05 collectors but I must received at least 75 of the first 100 made".
Oh well, happy to get it, play it, and own it :) . A very nice guitar. |

My memory might be cloudy on this one, but I don't think the '05 at NAMM had a serial number. At least not the one I played (I think there were 2 of them). Maybe I'm wrong. I don't get too hung up on serial numbers. Well, maybe the LAST one would be the most special. At least in my line of work, you don't want the first few serial numbers of anything - trust me!
Meanwhile I'll just sit here gazing at all these "old fashioned" guitars around me and dream of you guys with your new toys. Sure hope mom lets me out of the house to join the kick-ball game soon. |

Location: Converse, Texas | I have never doubted that AL would send me another guitar. He's a most honorable man. I just don't want him to get stuck when IMHO UPS damaged the guitar, so THEY should pay for it.
EDIT: I want to make it clear that I knew from the beginning when I talked to Al about the damage that he would replace it without a problem. I just don't want UPS to screw him over! |

Location: Upper Left USA | I have a sold guitar being delivered to EHRENBERG, AZ today and a bought guitar coming to me on Tuesday. All UPS and with insurance. I hope I never have to go through the processing for damage but they certianly charge enough to cover their mistakes. I hope all processes smoothly for you Hizz.
Am I too insensitive or nosy to ask what kind of damage was incurred? |

I am moved and you have caused me to have certain "feelings" in a way that I shouldn't have.
Your acid tongue, sharp wit, and sarcastic meanderings makes me think we were best friends in a prior life.....or at least bandmates! |

The bowl is very comfortable. SIts on my lap very well.
The tone is bright and clear. Intonation and setup is perfect.
Tonight I will need to plug it in! |

Advantages
1. warranty (5yrs)
2. available now with no wait
3. low number...why wait for #'s in the 600's
4. save a couple of bucks
snooze, you lose... |

Not to open a can of worms or anything, Have any of the owners of the 2005 collectors noticed a buzzing when picking open "A" string, as if the wires are vibrating inside the bowl?
It looks like the neck sandwiching is thinner on the new model.

Location: boulder | hi,
well, s/n 62 is all better. the wire from the pick up to the preamp had its end connector cover (at the preamp) come unscrewed. just had to reach in, slide the little cover back up the wire and screw it tight.
so here is my 1.5 cents worth, I love the tuner, very smooth, very easy to use. fit and finish is A+ ( loose wire cover not withstanding). tone and feel of custom legend, but sound seems a little more woody and projected. It is easy for me to finger chords, but neck does not seem wide. It is comfortable.
Overall, the guitar is easy to forget once I'm playing. Which I mean as a compliment. I just start playing and am not held back by guitar, just my skill level.
The contour bowl is comfortable and sounds more like a deep bowl then a mid bowl to me at least. englemen wood grain looks nice now and seems like it will age into a shimmery flame sort of pattern (s). I have not plugged in for electric test yet. If this is what spruce sounds like with a contour bowl, I am excited for a carbon top contour bowl.
Final judgement, even though i pre-ordered from local dealer the day before I found OFC (and hence Al) and paid local taxes, I am 100% happy with this purchase. job well done to New Hartford. mike |

Location: Anchorage, Alaska | I agree with fugot with his review. I find the 2005 very easy to finger chords as well. I found that my fingers are getting pretty sore like I just started playing again? I thought it might be due to this thing just calling out to be played, I have added an hour or 2 to my dfaily playing time since I got it last week. Then I read in another thread that the frets are higher on the LX's (which the 2005 has)than other "O's" and that was the cause of fingers that were a little sorer than usual. Whatever it is it's great and I love it. The sound is much brighter than my Al DiMeola and like I said, plays much "cleaner" for me. As far as looks, Simple elegance pretty much says it all. The grain on mine is so fine that from 3 or 4 feet away it looks more like ivory than wood. Beautiful. When I plugged it in to my Genz-Benz to check it out I was amazed. My wife came into my music room to see which guitar I was playing and when she looked at me she just started to laugh. She said I had a look on my face that looked like I just had great sex! That's one hell of a guitar!!! |

Location: Phoenix AZ | One thing I do notice about the 05C is that (at least on mine) the string spacing is a little tight at the nut. The nutwidth is the usual 1-11/16, but there is a pretty big gap on the outside between the high E string and the edge of the fretboard and low E and edge of the fretboard. Seems most of my other Ovations and Martins the E strings are a lot "closer to the edge" so to speak. Anyone else notice this? The only time it is an issue is on occasion I'll go to finger the low E with my thumb and won't quite hit it "right". But still 3 weeks into the process I'm loving the guitar big time. |

Hanging next to the 30th Anniv CL and the 1537...measured the same on bass and treble sides.
Something I did for the first time when I got it, capoed the 12th fret...tuner showed that it was perfect.
So, any fault in the song can only be blamed on the player. |

I ordered mine from Al - and he is indeed a true gentleman - Thanks Al!

Location: Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey | I just got to try a Collector's '05 in Samash Saturday. Had a serious buzz in the bridge, so I'm going to hold off on first impression of the sound til my next shot at playing one. The bowl design was very comfortable though.
I was shocked to find one at Samash already. The acoustic room staff guy didn't even know they had it in! I was describing all the new features to my friend who was trying out an Elite standard LX (and was loving it!), and asked the staff guy if they had any new '05s in...he said no. About 15 mintues later I stumbled on it.
I hope I get to try another one soon.
Just for kicks I tried a $3,000 dollar Taylor twelve string...after one strum, my love for Ovation was totally reaffirmed.

I wonder if the buzz was from another loose preamp wire connector cover? You can look into soundhole and see where wire is connected to preamp. It should have a litte black cover over the solder connection, if you can see the solder connection, there's the problem. It's a easy fix. Loosen up strings, reach in, slide connector up and rescrew connector back on.
I played my 2005 es today through small PA. It sounds great. Projects well and keeps it's tone well. electronics are easy to use. I miss notch filter from op-40 preamp, but that's me.
Also, for a skinny guy like me, I m sort of feeling like the contour bowl is not as comfortable as a mid depth bowl. Top of contour sort of sticks into me. I am still making judgements though. All in all, It is the ax that keeps getting picked up. ............mike |
